HiSET High School Equivalency Program

Students who pass the HiSet or the GED are awarded the same High School Equivalency Certificate.

STUDENT PROFILE:

Students may access software in person or remotely
  • Must be at least 17 and one-half years old. 
  • Credit deficient and not on track to graduate with your class.
  • The parent and student voluntarily agree to enroll in the program.

EXAM FEES: 

  • Initial Exam: $180
  • Retakes: $25 per subject (writing, reading, social studies, science, and mathematics)
  • Vouchers provided for demonstrated ability and consistent attendance.

1. What is the High School Equivalency program?

The O.U.H.S.D. High School Equivalency program is a computer-based study lab designed to assist students who are preparing for the High School Equivalency exam.

2. Is there more than one equivalency exam offered?
Yes. The two exams offered are the HiSET and the GED. Both exams offer the same exact High School Equivalency Certificate issued by the State of California’s Department of Education.

3. Is the High School Equivalency certificate recognized by Federal programs?

Yes. The US Military and Department of Labor recognize the equivalency certificate. Students who pass the exam also qualify for Federal student aid in the form of grants, loans and work-study. This includes free tuition at Oxnard and Ventura College through their “Promise” programs.

4. How old do I have to be to take the exam?

You must be within 60 days of your 18th birthday to take the exam.

5. How many chances do I get to pass the exam?

You get three attempts per calendar year. Only previously failed subjects need to be retaken.

6. How long does the program take?

It varies based on the skill level of the student. Pre-tests and lessons are provided to assist the instructor in determining when a student is ready to test. Some students are ready to test in a week, while others may take a 3-4 months.
